Another Succesful HAC!
This past weekend, the Youth Group of the Calgary FRC held their first Word & Deed Hunger Awareness Campaign. They successfully went without food for 24 hours and reached their goal of raising $1,000 for the Manja Safe House, a haven for girls in Malawi who are abused for their real or suspected involvement with witchcraft.
A big thank you to the participants and to the sponsors!

Just a little over 6 more hours left.... AND we also need your help!!!
After staying up to who-knows-when (at least for Janelle and Janita 3AM) watching movies and talking the youth all went to bed... 1AM it was lights out for most.
This morning you know when you are at a home with teenagers when everyone is sleeping until noon.... So far only a few youth are up and awake.
Early this morning Hannah and Garret had to go. Work and school related. But Garret promise not to eat for the 24 hours :) We are praying for strength for Garret that he will be able to do it by himself!
Breakfast for this morning: Water, Juice, and Ice cubes.... yummy !
Only 6 more hours and 3 minutes to go :)

Pastor and More
Around 10 Pastor Overduin and Mrs. Overduin came over to see how we were doing. After playing an intensive game of 4 on a couch we ended with a passage reading and a word of prayer as well as encouragement and to be reminded of those who have to live with the fact that it isn't 24 hours of fasting.
Now Nicole Slingerland is going to go and wrote something :)
"I'm having a ton of fun! I'm starting to get a little hungry but that is okay! Its all for a good cause!"

Today is the day!
Starting today at 5PM 6 amazing youth will fast for 24 hours for a Word and Deed Mission!
Join us as we do hourly updates, pictures and have some of the youth write blogs on how they are doing.
And rememeber all of the money we raise for the Manja Safe House will be sent to Word and Deed Missions to be used for the girls at the house :D
Here is a story about one of the girls... It makes you really think and how the world in Malawi works...
One of these girls was accused by the pastor of her church. He claimed that the Lord had shown him that she was a witch. The church beat her until the police intervened. She was unconscious for four days and when she had improved enough to leave she was not accepted by her relatives.
This home provides these girls with a safe haven from abuse, counselling, an introduction to biblical truth, and reintegration into society. Through prayer and counselling, all four of the practicing witches have rejected what is, for them, a type of religion.
Although Frank foresees these girls remaining in the project for a couple of years he feels that they have made great strides. They have counselled and educated the families that these girls come from, and are facilitating short visits between the girls and their families. It's their hope that eventually they will be able to launch an awareness campaign that will educate the broader Malawian community.
Please pray that...
- the four girls who were actually involved with witchcraft would see how evil it is and leave it completely behind
- the Holy Spirit would work repentance in the hearts of the girls at the home through the presentation of God's Word to them
- their emotional and physical hurts would be healed
- reconciliation with the girls families would be possible
- the project would be a means of witnessing to the girls' families and that God would bless those efforts
- Malawian society would be informed of the cruelty being done to children who are suspected of witchcraft and that the would rally against it
- wisdom would be given to Frank Phiri and Pastor Goliat (the counselors of the girls) and to Violet and Alinafe (the "matrons" of the house, or the ladies who live with the girls and act as guardians)
- there would be camaraderie in the home
- there would be safety at the home

God bless!

1 More day!
Tomorrow is the day! Starting at 5PM a few of the youth from the Calgary FRC LIFE Youth Group will be getting together raising funds for the Manja Safe House :) Down below is more information about the house :) Along with pictures :D
About The Manja Safe House
The Manja Safe House is located in a rural area in the Republic of Malawi. The road to the Manja Safe House is a bumpy one. The home that was chosen as the Safe House for children suspected of being "witches" had to be a rural site because the of the nature of the project. Malawian society does not look kindly on children who are involved in witchcraft. Some methods of punishment include stoning, beating, starving and burning alive. For the same reason, nobody in the Manja community is aware that this house is being used as a haven for girls who have suffered abuse for their involvement, suspected or real, with witchcraft.
There are currently eight girls living in the home. They range in age from 10 - 17 and have all been living there since the advent of the project in October 2010. Four of them were merely accused of practicing witchcraft and four of them actually were practicing witchcraft. Through prayer and counselling, all four of the practicing witches have rejected what is, for them, a type of religion.
This home provides these girls with a safe haven from abuse, counselling, an introduction to biblical truth, and reintegration into society.
Although Frank Phiri, manager of this project, foresees these girls remaining in the project for a couple of years he feels that they have made great strides. They have counselled and educated the families that these girls come from, and are facilitating short visits between the girls and their families. It's their hope that eventually they will be able to launch an awareness campaign that will educate the broader Malawian community.
The cost of this project is $15,000 each year for Operational costs.
